Carbon Based Lifeforms

Carbon Based Lifeforms (CBL) is the alchemical fusion of biology and technology, a pioneering Swedish ambient duo that has been architecting vast, psychedelic soundscapes since 1996. Formed by Johannes Hedberg and Daniel Segerstad in Gothenburg, Sweden, the pair met at fifteen and bonded over a shared resonance for early tracker software, video games, and electronic synthesis. What began as rudimentary experimentation on Amiga computers eventually crystallized into one of the most defining voices in the modern psychill and downtempo genres.
The ethos of Carbon Based Lifeforms rests perfectly on the precipice between earth and space. Their sonic architecture is deliberately designed to explore the symbiotic鈥攁nd sometimes destructive鈥攔elationship between nature and human technology. By blending organic field recordings with heavily modulated synthesizers, intricate acid-house baselines, and deep, generative drones, CBL crafts music that feels both ancient and inherently futuristic.
Their discography is a chronological grimoire of electronic mastery. Albums like Hydroponic Garden (2003) and World of Sleepers (2006) established their signature aesthetic: lush, reverb-drenched pads layered over crisp, hypnotic rhythms that simulate the breathing of a living ecosystem. Later works, such as Derelicts (2017) and Seeker (2023), venture further into themes of post-apocalyptic survival, exploring what remains after the collapse of the mechanical world.
In the studio, their process is a meticulous balancing act. Johannes often serves as the sound designer, losing himself in the granular details and harmonic foundations, while Daniel sculpts the rhythms, arrangements, and propulsive beats that give the tracks their forward momentum.
