Alan Moore

Alan Moore is widely considered the greatest comic book writer in history, but to categorize him merely as a “writer” is to miss the point entirely. He is a practicing ceremonial magician, an occult philosopher, and a vocal anarchist who has spent his life proving that Creativity is Magic.
Moore鈥檚 central thesis is that the word “Magic” and the word “Art” are interchangeable. He points out that the ancient deity Thoth was the god of both Magic and Writing. He famously argues that to “cast a spell” is simply to spell (to manipulate words to change consciousness). For Moore, a grimoire is just a grammar. The writer is a magician who pulls an idea from the ether (the “Idea Space”) and manifests it into physical reality as a book or a painting.
His work serves as a curriculum for the modern mage:
“V for Vendetta”: This is his manual on Anarchism and Symbols. He created the Guy Fawkes mask that was later adopted by the hacktivist group Anonymous and protestors worldwide. This proves his theory of magic: he created a fiction that became a heavy, political reality.
“Promethea”: This is not just a comic book; it is a Graphic Grimoire. It is a step-by-step guide to the Kabbalah, the Tarot, and the history of magic, disguised as a superhero story. It is designed to induce a psychedelic, magical state in the reader.
“The Moon and Serpent Bumper Book of Magic”: His long-awaited (and legendary) magnum opus, intended to be the ultimate clear, rational guide to the history and practice of magic, stripping away the “spooky” nonsense to reveal the luminous science of the imagination.
For the Revelucian, Alan Moore is the elder Gandalf. He rejects the commercialized “Wizardry” of Hollywood (which he views as infantile) in favor of the hard, dangerous work of expanding human consciousness. He teaches that the “Apocalypse” is not a physical destruction, but a mental revelation鈥攁 lifting of the veil.
